Doing
What Works in the New Millennium
Carla Johnson, Principal
"Welcome to the home of the 'Burton Bumblebees',
where we work together to help dreams
come true."
We are a student centered, parent and community involvement learning center
with hard working students and dedicated staff. We are located at 1661 Buffalo
Road, Erie, Pa.16510. Burton is
composed of a varied population of approximately 261 energetic students in
grades K - 5, representing 7 nations. Our class sizes range from 16-32. We have
a diverse staff whom are continuously pursuing their
educational and personal development.
We are a School-Wide Project
School with District approved
decisions being made by parents, staff and community. For over 15 years we have
had an active Student Council who participates in decision making and community
services. We provide special programs and services, including Learning Support,
Emotional Support, Speech, Art, Music, Gym, counseling services. Ninety-five
percent of the students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch.
Our focus is on caring and respect for self and others, physical wellness,
academic achievement, and technology (Computer Lab, and stand alone computers
in every class). We encourage a strong bond and relationship with parents,
community and local businesses. In 1981, Burton
became the first adopt-a-school partnership in the state of Pennsylvania.
Hammermill Paper Company, now Wal
Mart, adopted Burton School
and formed an active partnership that continues to involve employees from both
organizations to help children appreciate the learning environment. In 1997 Burton
was also adopted by the Shiloh Baptist church which coordinates a Bible Study
group for elementary students.
Our mission is to help our students to find
meaning in their world, construct their future, have
an impact on their world and to understand themselves. We invite
you to step inside our hive and "buzz" around with
us and see why we are Fantastic and Amazing!
