Third Grade
Students participated in the Hands-On Learning Grant
The
students learned about the history of Erie. They read books about
the history of Erie. A guest speaker from the
Historical Society shared many interesting facts with the children.
The
students visited Presque Isle to learn about the effects of garbage on the
natural surroundings. They also observed the many macro-invertebrates
living in the ponds of Presque Isle. Students recorded their notes on the
handheld computers provided by the grant.
The
students also visited the MaritimeMuseum leaning about the history of Erie. They were fascinated by
the Flagship Niagara.
The students
tested the waters of Lake Erie to find out if the lake is polluted. Mr. Zagorski of GannonUniversity took the students out on the
research vessel, The Environaut. They
collected water samples and tested the water.
After
the students returned to the classroom, they used microscopes to search for
indicators of pollution. They recorded their results in a formal lab
report.
Students
created Powerpoint presentations to show all they
learned during the entire grant.
