Adopt-A-School Program

Erie Insurance Group

Meet Miss Lilly Pad

BACKGROUND
The partnership program (Adopt-A-School) is sponsored by the Erie Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1987 the Chamber of Commerce invited Erie Insurance and other local businesses and colleges to participate in the program. Erie Insurance adopted their neighborhood school, Pfeiffer-Burliegh Elementary. The school has approximately 750 students in grades Kindergarten through grade six.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the partnership program is to develop and promote a positive climate of interaction, involvement, cooperation and understanding between Pfeiffer-Burleigh and Erie Insurance Group.

The Adopt-A-School Program has been a highly beneficial endeavor for the students of Pfeiffer-Burleigh and the employees of Erie Insurance. Some of the most effective activities include pen-pals, one-on-one tutoring, and award ceremonies for perfect attendance and honor roll students.

Yearly Activities
October: Primary grades have a Halloween parade for EI employees.

November: EI clothing drive for PB families during Parent Conference Days

December: An abundance of activities from hats and mittens for the children to visits from Santa Claus.

March: A Book Fair - each child gets to choose and keep a book from the book fair.

These are just a few of the activities provided by Erie Insurance Exchange. They also provide skating parties, bowling, and trips to the zoo.

REPRESENTATIVES
Each grade level, kindergarten through grade five, has a Pfeiffer-Burleigh teacher representative and an Erie Insurance employee representative to coordinate projects for that particular grade. A meeting is scheduled for the beginning of each school year for all representatives to meet and discuss projects for the upcoming school year.

CELEBRATING TEN YEARS OF WORKING TOGETHER

Erie Insurance helped mark the tenth anniversary of our partnership in 1999 by donating the funds to build a new playground on the school's property. Erie Insurance employee volunteers and teachers from Pfeiffer-Burleigh donated their time to “construct” the playground.

Dear Mr. Milne:

The Partnership between Pfeiffer- Burleigh Elementary School and the Erie Insurance Group is a superb example of industry and public school cooperation. Dr James Barker, Superintendent of Schools, has required that principals raise their expectations for students’ academic success. With your assistance and support of this effort, I expect students at Pfeiffer-Burleigh will achieve at higher levels than in the past years.

We would like to thank each of your employees who donate their time to tutor our students and we appreciate the resources that Erie Insurance provides to assist our teachers in their effort to help our students. We especially want to thank you for your generosity to the improvement of our library collection, a focus for the 2001-2002 school year.

Our improved academic achievement will validate our unified efforts, as Erie Insurance’s recent sales record has validated your efforts to market your product.

I look forward to maintaining and expanding our partnership. You should be proud of your employees’ contributions to improve the lives of 750 young people in one of Erie’s urban neighborhoods.

Erie Insurance presented Pfeiffer-Burleigh with $3,500.00 to create a mini computer lab in the library.

Thank You Erie Insurance!!
