2nd Grade Sells Lemonade, 2009
The Second Grade at Perry Elementary has welcomed the opportunity to give back to the community.  They have adopted the Pediatric Ward at St. Vincent's Hospital.  Because there are children that come and go on a daily basis, the hospital is in  need of activities and supplies to meet the children's needs.

Upon hearing this, the students of the second grade decided to sell lemonade in order to raise funds for the much needed supplies.  The students read a story about children who sold lemonade to raise money for their club house.  In order to know how to run a lemonade stand business, they read a non-fiction piece of literature to gain information.  While they were selling the lemonade, they were making change and counting money.  This project not only allowed the students to help those in need, but allowed them to apply their learning in a "real life" way.

The students sold 656 cups of lemonade and raised $164.00  With the money, the students were able to buy activity books, crayons, sippy cups, pacifiers, toys and much more.  Because the children at the hospital are too sick to have visitors, the Second Grade practiced Christmas carols to sing at the hospital.  they were unable to visit with the children in a personal way, buy they were able to spread some holiday cheer to the staff at St. Vincent's Hospital with their caroling.

By participating in the community service project at Perry Elementary, the children are not only giving back to the community, that support them on a daily basis, but are also gaining a valuable lesson in the old motto that "it is better to give than to receive."
