Race to Read, 2007

Reading

We have a 5 block Literacy Plan throughout the district. Your child will receive equal time of writing, word work, self-selected reading and guided reading. They will also listen to good literature. This plan gives the teacher time to work on your child's individual reading level to increase your child's fluency and expression when reading. Please watch for your child's reading books to come home.

Spelling

Your child will learn many high-frequency words. They will also learn a word family chunk each week to study. This will make your child a well-rounded speller! Please study your words the whole week.

Math

By the end of 2nd grade, your child will have been taught to add and subtract with 1 and 2 digits. The students will learn to tell time to the hour, half-hour, and quarter to and quarter past the hour. They will learn about money and calendars. Our new math series is Investigations. This series is designed to engage students in making sense of mathematical ideas. There are six major goals which guide the development of the Investigations in Number, Data, and Space curriculum.

P
roject
Our project will be in conjunction with St. Vincent's Children's Floor and NICU. We will work on learning about what St. Vincent's does for the kids and how we can help them. We will help by collecting items, writing letters, doing Art projects for the patients. We will also take a trip to St. Vincent's Hospital.

Writing

During writing, your child will learn to write good paragraphs. We are looking for an opening or topic sentence, 3 to 6 details and a closing sentence. We want your child to stay on topic and use their conventions of writing. These conventions include capital letters, punctuations, and spacing between words. Students become good writers by practicing.

Study Buddies

We are doing "study buddies" with 7th and 8th graders. We have been working on math skills, and reading stories so far!
