READING/WRITING:

Our big block Language Arts Curriculum is based upon the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Language Arts and Writing. Academic instruction follows the district's curriculum maps, which were created by our teachers and administrators. We are reviewing and improving skills learned last year, and are mastering all fourth grade skills this year. Our goals are to demonstrate student progress and to maximize student proficiency.

We practice our writing skills on a daily basis, with our work products being self-evaluated, peer-evaluated, or teacher evaluated, based on the Pennsylvania Reading Assessment Rubric.

We use the Harcourt Collections Reading series, "Touch a Dream."

Our students proficiency is assessed in the fall, winter and spring through the ESD Standards based assessments. These tests focus on Pennsylvania Reading Standards.

Perry fourth graders are happy to participate in the Newspaper in Education Program with the Times Publishing Company. We are provided with weekly newspapers which we use in our classroom, then take home to share with our families. We enjoy reading the weekly chapter of the reading series books, and using the newspapers for several learning activities. We have been fortunate to have many writing and art projects published in the paper from Perry students.

MATH:

Our math curriculum instruction also follows the district's curriculum maps, which is based upon the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics. Students are assessed for proficiency in the Fall, Winter, and Spring through the Erie School District Standards Based Assessments.

Our District utilizes a PA standards-based Mathematics series from Scott Foresman. Math instruction focuses on multiplication and division of 2 and 3 digit numbers, as well as on fractions, decimals, rounding, estimating, time and money, and measurement. Additionally, problem-solving skills are taught daily by Math Communication instruction.

SCIENCE:

We have introduced into our science program two new "hands-on" units: "Electrical Circuits," and "Land and Water." Our science curriculum uses the Houghton Mifflin "Science" series. Curriculum focuses in the areas of Organization of Living Things and Ecosystems. We are looking forward to the many projects and experiments in our texts.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Perry's theme is Community Service, which has strong ties to our Social Studies curriculum. We are utilizing the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies series, "Pennsylvania Studies."

We integrate our Social Studies curriculum across all subjects. Our focus is learning about Pennsylvania by studying our state's regions.

As a community service project, the 4th grade has adopted the Second Harvest Food Bank as a partner. Many community service projects such as food and money drives are conducted throughout the year to assist needy Erie residents. We have learned what great services this organization provides to our community, and how we can take part in assisting the Food Bank in its efforts.
