Perry Elementary School - Grade 5

Grade 5 goals throughout the school year are in areas of Reading, Writing, and mathematics. Skills and strategies in these academics areas are a daily focus. Academic instruction follows the district's curriculum maps. The over all goal is to demonstrate student progress and to maximize student proficiency in all academic areas. Being proficient in the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Reading, Writing and Mathematics is our final desired level.
The fifth grade reading series is from the Harcourt Collections titled "Pathways to Adventure." There are six themes with 5 stories in each: "Look Inside," "Teamwork," "A Changing Planet," "Express Yourself," "School Rules," American Adventure." Our students proficiency is assessed through the ESD Standards based assessments. These test are given quarterly, and have a focus on Pennsylvania Reading Standards.
The fifth grade math curriculum instruction is based upon the Pennsylvania Academic Standard for Mathematics. Proficiency testing is assessed through the ESD Standards based assessments. These tests are given quarterly. Our series is the Scott Foresman math grade 5 level.
In the 5th grade we strive to achieve, throughout the year, many types of writing. Narrative pieces, informational pieces, and persuasive pieces are our main focus. Along with the types, quality of writing is stressed. To be a good writer you must do the following: maintain focus, support content with examples and details, demonstrate controlled organization, display an awareness of style, conventions of writing (complete sentences, spelling, punctuation, capitalization).
The fifth grade, in following with our Geography and Community Service theme, has chosen to focus with the organization called EHCA. (Erie Home for Children and Adults) Each year they come to our school to meet the fifth graders in November. This starts our community service project for the year. It involves the group presenting information on their agency and how Perry students can help through their awareness and efforts. The fifth grade students do many projects throughout the year relating to this organization. Projects include several forms of writing (narrative, informative, and persuasive), a research paper and a fundraiser. "Good citizens start with knowledge of their community."
