6th Graders Build Volcanoes
6th Graders Enjoy Novels

The sixth grade will spend this year at Perry involved in many different activities. As always, their studies come first as they prepare for the challenging curriculum of middle school. However, the teachers also make sure the sixth graders have plenty of time to have fun and learn the importance of community service at the same time. Sixth grade is a perfect time to "give back" to all of those faculty and staff that have helped them along the way and also to serve as role models to those younger Perry Admirals hoping to steer their ship toward success someday.

Sixth graders work with Mr. Berchtold to serve as Safety Patrols. Regardless of the weather, these courageous boys and girls brave the cold to make sure all of the students arrive and depart safely to and from Perry School daily.

Sixth grade students are also involved in the Learn and Serve Program, headed by Mrs. Minichelli. These students volunteer in a variety of ways to serve the Perry community. They make posters, collect canned goods, and sell subs. Many days are spent before and after school packing coats for the needy and helping wherever it's needed.

Perry's sixth graders can also be seen (and probably heard as well!) delivering newspapers to the classrooms. After dividing and organizing, students make sure teachers have their newspapers bright and early for use with their students.

It's hard to believe the sixth grade has time for their studies with all of these extra projects. But, of course, getting a head start on being a lifelong learner is what it's all about.

Mrs. Farnham and Ms. Sabados both work hard to make sure their students learn what they need to be successful in life. Students read a variety of novels and the teachers introduce their students to many kinds of literature. These include poetry, fiction, and biographies. Students enjoy discussing what they read as well as reading in literature circles, allowing for a more student-directed classroom. Students also enjoy writing across the curriculum and look forward to working with 2nd grade buddies this year. While all of this is going on, Mr. Boyle, the LS teacher, navigates throughout the day, helping those most challenged by the curriculum.

Without a doubt, Perry sixth graders enjoy a yearlong journey of service, hard work, and fun!
