7th and 8th Grade Math
Welcome to math at Perry Elementary, Grades 7 and 8. I am excited to be here as a part of the middle school teaching team and I know that we will have a successful, exciting, and productive year. I look forward to being a part of the academic progress your child will make. I have high academic and behavioral expectations for my students. I expect EVERY student to learn to the best of his or her ability. To aid in this achievement, please note that I require each student to have a math notebook (3-ring binder) with five divider tabs.
Grade 7 and regular Grade 8 (both Pre-Algebra) will be using new textbooks - Connected Math - that focus on understanding mathematical concepts. We will be using hands-on activities and writing in math to aid in that understanding. Grade 8 honors (Algebra I) will be using the green Prentice Hall Algebra I textbook.
Because you are an integral part of your child's education, I feel home-school communication is of vital importance. Please contact me at any time. I can be reached through the main office at school 874-6485 or via email at kwaller@eriesd.org If you would like to talk in person, I am available to schedule appointments after school. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
There are several ways you can help your child succeed in math class:
Ask your child what he or she learned in school each day. This simple routine will help them review and find holes in their understanding.
Emphasize the importance of homework and hard work and monitor whether your student is completing his or her homework each night. Homework is assigned most nights. Students should be using their agenda books to record homework assignments Please help your child establish a regular time and place (away from the TV) to complete their homework.
Encourage your students to ask questions in class and come in for extra help when they need it. Extra help is scheduled for Thursdays or at other times by appointment.
Ask your student to see their grade sheets. I will issue frequent (my goal is weekly) progress reports. this will help both you and them stay up to date on exactly what grade they have in my class and what they need to do to improve it.
Also, praise them for doing well...they deserve it!
