Reading

We are working very hard at Reading using the Four Blocks of Literacy. These blocks consist of Writing, Guided Reading, Working with Words and Self-Selected Reading. These blocks enable the First Graders to become more active in the reading process through innovative strategies.

We encourage all parents to read with your child every night. When reading, it is a good idea to check for comprehension by having your child retell the beginning, middle and end of the story. Also ask them about the characters and setting of the story.

Math

The focus in math in first grade is on addition and subtraction taught with manipulatives to give the students hands-on experience with numbers. By the end of 1st grade, your child will have been taught to problem solve using: graphs, tables, manipulatives, and charts. The students will be taught to count coins, tell time to the hour and half hour, and add and subtract 2 digit numbers without trading. Many concepts such as counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's, days of the week, months of the year, place value, yesterday, today and tomorrow and math vocabulary are taught during our daily calendar time.

Please look for the family letter that is sent home at the beginning of each chapter. This letter lets you know the skills your child will be working on the next few weeks. It also gives ideas of different activities you can do at home to reinforce what we are doing at school.

Homework

Check and review your child's homework, then sign it and make sure your child puts it in their folder to turn in the next day at school. Some of the homework the students are assigned are to be worked on continuously because it builds on. For example your child is expected to practice reading and using their vocabulary and word wall words every night. The students will be tested on them every Friday and comprehensively at different times during the school year.

Geography/Community Service

The first grade classrooms will be integrating the residents of the Presbyterian Lodge into their curriculum. The knowledge of geography will further enable the students to develop an understanding of the relationships between people, places, and their environment over time. Through this partnership, the students will be able to develop an understanding of the following:

1. the needs of the community necessary for elderly services
2. the need of adequate health care and their responsibilities
3. the various careers relating to caring for the elderly
4. how to enhance community and public relations
5. develop a respect for the elderly community

Spelling

Your child will learn how to spell high frequency words as well as phonetic patterned words. They will be tested on these spelling words on Fridays. We will be working on different spelling patterns each week.

In Closing...

Thank you for your support and cooperation. Remember we are a team (parents, school, and child) and each person must do their part in order to succeed. We can't stress enough how important it is to your child's success in school, that you read and work with them every night.

YOU ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT TEACHER IN YOUR CHILD'S LIFE!

*At the present time, students in first grade who are identified as exceptional, needing learning support and/or emotional support services,
are included in the classroom with their non-exceptional peers.
