Bibliography – The last section or page of a report or project, that gives specific credit to the author and source of your research, lists where you gathered your research from, and assists in avoiding plagiarism.

 

Binary - A special numbering system that is the only type of language that a computer can read, made up of only 2 digits - 1’s and 0’s

 

Computer  - A high speed math machine that processes information

 

CPU (Central Processing Unit) -The main brain of the computer, where all information gets processed

 

Cursor – A flashing line or arrow on your monitor that tells you directly where you currently are at on the screen

 

Data - Information of any kind used by a computer

 

File - A collection of related information stored and dealt with as a single unit.

 

Flash-drive (aka jump-drive) – A powerful temporary storage device that can be carried in your pocket – great for carrying school projects around with

 

Hardware - The physical parts that make up the computer system; keyboard, printer, etc.

 

Input  - Data going into the computer.

 

Memory (RAM) - The part of a computer that acts as a temporary storage area; also known as RAM

 

Monitor - A screen that displays all output from the computer

 

Mouse  -A handheld device that is used to move the cursor around on the screen and make choices with

 

OS  (Operating System) -The main software program that tells the CPU exactly what to do

 

Output - Data or information that is coming out of or being displayed by the computer.

 

Process – To change; in relation to a computer, a computer takes input information and processes (changes) the information according to the instructions it is given, and then displays the changed information as output.

 

Program/Software - A pre-planned group of coded instructions and/or directions that tells a computer what to do

 

Spreadsheet - A type of program that organizes information into rows and columns, often used in banking and business.

 

 

Technology – Any tool, machine or process that improves our lives and/or makes our work easier.

 

 

Word Processor - A program designed for writing, creating, editing, and storing text documents such as letters and reports.
