• Elementary Mathematics Grade 2 Introductory Unit

Subject: Mathematics
Timeline: 6 Days
Unit Title: Introductory Unit

Unit Overview:

Instructional time for grade one focuses developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20 by using a variety of concrete objects to model adding to, taking from and comparing situations to develop meaning for the operations of adding and subtracting.  They will have experiences to help them understand connections between counting and adding and subtracting.

Students will also be provided the opportunity for understanding and using properties of addition to create sophisticated strategies for adding fluently.  Students will also develop understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones. By giving students opportunities to build, discuss, and use methods of adding tens and ones, they will develop number sense that will be required for their mathematical careers.

This unit is a brief snap shot of the learning from first grade. Students should be able to quickly grasp review concepts. This unit moves rapidly to reinforce strategies and learning from first grade to support students as they start second grade.

Unit Objectives:

At the end of this unit, all students will be able to:
• add and subtract fluently within ten.
• add and subtract within 100 using strategies and concrete models.
• solve equations with three addends.
• tell time to the hour and half hour using analog and digital clocks.

Focus Standards:

PA.CCSS.Math.Content.CC.2.1.1.B.2 Use place value concepts to represent amounts of tens and ones and to compare two digit numbers. (1.NBT.2)
PA.CCSS.Math.Content.CC.2.1.1.B.3 Use place value concepts and properties of operations to add and subtract within
100. (1.NBT.4, 1.NBT.5)
PA.CCSS.Math.Content.CC.2.2.1.A.1 Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction within 20. (1.OA.2)
PA.CCSS.Math.Content.CC.2.4.1.A.2 Tell and write time to the nearest half hour using both analog and digital clocks. (1.MD.3)

Mathematical Practice Standards:

#1 - Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
#2 - Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
#3 - Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
#4 - Model with mathematics
#5 - Use appropriate tools strategically
#6 - Attend to precision
#7 - Look for and make use of structure
#8 - Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Elements of Instruction:

First Grade Common Core State Standards for Operations and Algebraic Thinking, in add and subtract within 10, students demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.  Students are exposed to the use of pennies as manipulatives for adding and subtracting.  Students will be fully exposed to all of the coins and bills in Second Grade.

First Grade Common Core State Standards for Numbers and Operations in Base-10 state:  students will understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.  Students will be able to compare two-digit numbers based on the meanings of the tens and one digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, <, and =.

Differentiation:

Each lesson has differentiation options for each portion of the lesson. Additional differentiation options are listed with directions and student masters in the Teacher’s Guide.
