    A Letter from the Superintendent

    October 16, 2020:

    Dear Families,

I want to thank you for your continued patience and flexibility as we’ve worked together to navigate the many challenges this global pandemic has presented. I speak for everyone here at the district when I say we could not be more grateful for your cooperation and support.

Our intent has always been to bring students back to the classrom as soon as it is safe to do so, starting with our elementary students. Based on guidance from the Erie County Department of Health, we feel confident in launching a hybrid model of instruction for our students in preK-5th grade. Middle and high school students will continue to work remotely, with the goal of resuming in-person instruction for those students as soon as possible.

Under the hybrid model, your child would attend school in person on Monday through Thursday one week. The following week, your child would participate in remote instruction Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, all students will participate in remote instruction.  If your child chooses to participate in the hybrid model, in-person instruction will begin the week of Nov. 9 or Nov. 16, depending on your child’s class. Please look for more information coming soon.

All students also have the option to continue 100% remote instruction. If your child chooses to continue with 100% remote instruction, please understand that their teacher may change, depending on the total number of students who choose that option and other factors.

Special education students in self-contained classrooms will continue to have the option to attend school in person, five days a week. Beginning in the second quarter, we will also offer targeted in-person instruction to some students in preK-5 who receive supplemental special education services, some ELL students, and seniors at risk of not graduating. Career and technical education students will continue to receive in-person instruction on assigned days. You will be contacted by the district if your student falls into one of these categories.

In order to best serve you and to help us plan for the quarter ahead, we’re asking you to complete a form committing your student to participation in the hybrid option OR continued participation in remote instruction for the second quarter of the school year. Please fill out the commitment form by Oct. 23. Please complete the form even if you have already responded to a previous One Call telephone survey.

The link to the commitment form will be available on your child’s Schoology page by Friday, Oct. 16. If you have any difficulty finding or completing the form, please contact your child’s school directly. Please complete one form per child, using the link found on each child’s page. If you make a mistake in completing the form, or would like to change your preference, please call the assistant superintendent’s office at 874-6015 before Oct. 23.

For more information, resources, and updates regarding district operations throughout the school year, please visit www.eriesd.org/reopen. Again, thank you for doing everything you can to help make your child’s school year a success.

    Sincerely,
