Erie's Public Schools' two JROTC programs recently underwent and passed a rigorous national accreditation program assessment, with the Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy’s Pride Battalion being designated as an “Honor Unit with Distinction”. This is the highest designation that a JROTC program can earn and places the Collegiate Academy cadets in the top twenty percent (20%) in the nation.
The JROTC Program for Accreditation (JPA) is used to evaluate secondary educational institutions and JROTC instructors, as defined by public laws, contracts, Army regulations, and U.S. Army Cadet Command policies to ensure compliance with program criteria. School districts and instructors will receive a JPA visit at least once every three years.
The Erie High Royals Battalion underwent their evaluation on January 26, with the NPCA Pride Battalion being evaluated on February 2, 2021. The accreditation is provided by a national accrediting agency known as AdvancED (www.advanc-ed.org). As an accredited Special Purpose Program, JROTC must adhere to AdvancED’s Standards for Quality. The standard is to develop and maintain a comprehensive evaluation program emphasizing continuous improvement in teaching and learning. The inspection is designed to assess primarily the areas of teaching and learning and consists of accreditation criteria which includes cadet participation and the assessment of instructor portfolios. The instructor portfolio is designed to show evidence of effective teaching and learning, assessment, professional development, collaborative activities, and continuous improvement efforts. Cadets are required to create and maintain their own organized portfolio collection of work based on accomplishments, personality, goals, and aspirations. Their portfolios must show evidence of problem-solving, decision making, critical thinking and leadership, as well as goal-provided insights and information on the cadet’s personal achievements and growth over time.
This accreditation process demonstrates that Erie's Public Schools continue to provide world-class educational opportunities to our high school population that ensures they remain competitive on a national level and are prepared to meet their post-secondary educational goals.
