Clear backpack requirement and distribution

EPS families,

In August of this year you received a letter with several important updates for the 2024-2025 school year, including the planned implementation of a clear backpack policy. According to the new policy, all bags carried by students – including backpacks, purses, duffle bags, fanny packs, cross-body bags and satchels – must be clear. This policy applies to all students, grades preK through 12.

Erie’s Public Schools has purchased clear backpacks for every student and will begin distribution of backpacks at schools starting Monday, January 6. Each student will receive one backpack. Students are not required to use the district-issued backpack, but must adhere to the clear bag policy.

We understand a change like this can prompt many questions, and have attached answers to several of the most frequently asked here. Should you have any additional questions, please contact your child’s principal; Supervisor of School and Community Safety Matthew Parker at mparker@eriesd.org; or Assistant Superintendent Neal Brokman at nbrokman@eriesd.org. Thank you in advance for partnering with us and supporting our efforts to ensure the safety and security of our staff, students and visitors.

Sincerely,

Erie’s Public Schools
