McKinley's Dudes & Donuts event was a PACKED house last night!! 🍩
From dads, to papas, to uncles, to brothers, and to cousins, we had a great time celebrating the incredible men in our school community! Students and their special dude made photo frames complete with a printed family picture from the event, enjoyed donuts together (obviously 😉), and overall just enjoyed the quality time together with all of our Mariners!
Special thanks to McKinley teachers and staff for volunteering their time to help! Events like these are made possible through our community school funding from United Way of Erie County!
To all the dudes, thank you for not only coming to the event, but for continuing to support our school & community!

Mrs. Howe's Kindergarten and 1st Grade music classes have been learning about Louis Armstrong!
Kindergarten read "What a Wonderful World" with their listening buddies and used used scarves to create rainbows with the song .
And our 1st Graders listened to the song, read the book, and had a class discussion about the things and people that make our world wonderful.

Yesterday, we kicked off our McKinley Loves Kindness Challenge with a Spirit Day in honor of Random Acts of Kindness Day! Students and staff proudly wore pink and red to show their support and commitment to spreading kindness throughout our school. 💗❤️
It was amazing to see our halls filled with bright colors and even brighter smiles. Together, we are making McKinley a place where kindness matters every single day!

Reminder, our Dudes & Donuts event is THIS Thursday, February 19th from 3:30-5:30pm at McKinley. Students can bring more than one special "dude" with them. Please note that the doors will close at 5pm to allow time to complete the activities. See flyer for more info!

We are kicking off our McKinley Loves Kindness (MLK) Challenge this week! To help us get started, wear your red or pink on Tuesday for Random Acts of Kindness Day!

Our Pre-K students are also learning about Black History!
This week, our students were exploring bridges and tunnels like civil engineer, Archie Alexander and became chemists like Percy Julian by experimenting with baking soda and vinegar.
We love watching their little minds at work!

Our Kindergartners had a special in school visit from the @eriekidsmuseum expERIEnce Children's Museum as part of the Educational Passport Program in partnership with Erie Arts and Culture @erieartsculture! The kids had a great time and to quote one of our own teachers, "can the museum just come to school everyday?!" 💓
Through the Educational Passport Program, every grade level is connected to a partnering organization that will include a combination of hands on, in school activities and field trips! This is just the first visit of many for our Mariners.
Partnerships like this are made possible through the community school model! Keep your eyes out for more fun learning opportunities to come the rest of the school year!

Congratulations to this month's Principal 100 winners! Throughout the month, students are nominated by teachers and staff for being great leaders, showing improvements, being kind, and all of the other positive characteristics our Mariners have! When students are nominated, their name goes on a Bingo board and when their row or column fills up, students get to do a fun activity with Principal Bull.
Today's activity was making homemade slime-- our favorite!

What a wonderful day for a hockey game! McKinley Captains and Champion students enjoyed an exciting trip to the @erieotters Erie Otters Hockey Club to attend a game.
Our Captains and Champions are our student leaders in 4th & 5th Grades! They work really hard each day to set a good example of what it means to be a Mariner and a leader at our school.
A huge thank-you to Amy Grande, Community School Director, and United Way for providing this amazing opportunity for our students through the community school model!

During the first semester, our fourth grade students participated in the Books Ahoy reading challenge. They read books independently and earned gold coins for the amount of time read and quizzes taken to travel through a series of ports until they reached their ultimate destination of Treasure Island.
As a grade level, our 4th graders read over 2,000 books in 4 months!!!
Congratulations to our Mariners! A big shout out to Ms. Adiutori & Mrs. Spitznogle for organizing the challenge!

Mrs. Saez's 4th grade participated in a scientific investigation last week. They made observations and gathered evidence to discover how a battery could make a light shine.🔦

Mrs. Farina's 5th Grade prepared and executed a very important classroom debate... Team Brandy vs. Team Monica!
Students worked on their persuasive writing skills and put together their arguments to present their case based on facts they found in the music video "The Boy Is Mine."
Based on the jury deliberation after the case presentations, it was determined that Team Brandy won the case & actor Mekhi Phifer did in fact "belong" to Brandy, not Monica. 😂
Truthfully, we may have some future lawyers on our hands! This was such a fun learning activity that the kids are still bragging about-- as they should!

For all the dads, please check out this opportunity for connection!

The efforts and contributions of many African American educators and community leaders have helped Erie's Public Schools to become the district it is today. Thank you to all of the amazing individuals who help us continue #buildingexcellencetogether! We are especially grateful for our superintendent, Dr. Natalyn Gibbs, who is dedicated to bringing the community together and supporting our students and their families.
This month our students are learning about the important African American figures throughout history. You can stay up to date on what they are doing each week to celebrate Black History Month by visiting our website: https://www.eriesd.org/blackhistory.

Last week, fourth grade students in Mrs. Miller's classroom read a passage together about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and answered questions about what they read to spark conversation with each other.

Reminder - there is no school for students next Monday, January 26th AND next Friday, January 30th.

Mrs. Dempsey's class completed puzzles in group for community circle to focus on teamwork and working together! We think the smiles say it all!

Ms. Ronto's 2nd Graders & Mr. Ross’ 4th Graders kicked off the kindness challenge together! The students made cards to encourage and thank each other for being such good "anchor mates" (that's what we call our classroom buddies😊⚓).
We see kindness in our building everyday, but we're ready to level up during our kindness challenge! Get ready... 💓

💙 Kindness in Action at McKinley! 💙
During the month of December, McKinley students participated in our Anti-Bullying Campaign by creating a schoolwide Kindness Chain, now proudly displayed in the lobby. Each link represents an act of kindness a student completed, reminding us that small actions can make a big difference. Together, we are building a culture of respect, empathy, and inclusion—one act of kindness at a time.
