USAD team wins regional competition and advances to states
Congratulations to the Collegiate Academy United States Academic Decathlon team for taking first place at the regional competition at Moniteau High School on February 13 and 14. The team has advanced to the state competition in Hershey, PA, on March 13 and 14. At stake: a chance to compete at the national competition in Garden Grove, CA, in April.
The team of nine comprises Sydnie Ashley, Sophia Gnacinski, Penelope King, Kaylee Lindstrom, Netesh Magar, Thomas Mayo, Ava West, Isaaq Wilson, and Serena Xu.
Team members won many individual medals on their way to first place:
Thomas Mayo: gold in essay, silver in speech, gold in interview, bronze in math, and bronze in economics
Ava West: bronze in essay, bronze in interview, bronze in music, silver in art, silver in literature, silver in science, gold in economics, gold in social science, and silver overall
Isaaq Wilson: silver in essay, gold in music, gold in art, silver in math, gold in science, silver in econ, silver in social science, and gold overall
Netesh Magar: bronze in science

The team is coached by Pete Wojciechowski and Jeff Weiss.

Congratulations to senior Eva Kari, who earned a $1000 scholarship from the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artists Association. Her work, and the work of many other student artists, was on display during the association's recent scholarship exhibition.

Schools can earn the Honor Roll recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing their school’s college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness. The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
Collegiate Academy had 65% of seniors who took at least one AP Exam during high school, 42% of seniors scoring a three or higher on at least one AP Exam, and 23% of seniors who took five or more AP Exams! Collegiate Academy offers 29 AP courses across all subjects, including English, math, science, social studies, art, and computer programming.
“We are continually working to improve the AP experience at Collegiate Academy and are proud of the hard work and determination put forth by our students and teachers. As our AP program grows, we have seen students explore new subjects and dive into content at the college level. The critical thinking skills developed in AP classes transfer to their other coursework and prepare them for future success. Rory Gardner, a 12th-grade student in the VPA program at Collegiate Academy, has been named the 12th-grade winner and will receive a $500 award for her exceptional artwork. Bianca Flores, a 9th-grade student, has been selected as the 9th-grade winner and will receive a $200 award in recognition of her artistic talent and creativity.
An award ceremony honoring these students will be held on Tuesday, January 27th at 5:00 p.m. at the Youth Leadership Institute of Erie, 1306 E. Lake Road.

HUGE congratulations to Erie High Royals varsity boys’ basketball Head Coach Shannon Pullium, who with a 69–47 win over Chapmanville Regional, surpassed Al Calabrese to claim the title of winningest boys basketball coach in Erie’s Public Schools history with 326 career victories.
Thank you, Coach, for your leadership, your steadfast dedication, your love for our district, and for serving as a role model for our stellar student athletes. We - and they - are lucky to have you!
