McKinley 4th Grade Goes to the Erie Zoo, Sort of.

November 19, 2013
Students in Mrs. Koper's and Mrs. Baloga's 4th Grade science classes took a trip to the Erie Zoo today, in the McKinley Library. Students used the Distance Learning equipment from our technology center to view various mammals and reptiles housed at the zoo. Students were able to interact with experts at the zoo throughout the virtual field trip. What a great session!

WJET-TV (ABC/Erie) Highlights McKinley's ELL Program

McKinley Elementary School
McKinley has an enrollment of 656 students, from grades K to 5. Included in these grades we have three Life Skills Classrooms and one ELL Classroom. Our ELL classroom has 70 students representing families from Nepal, Iraq, Bosnia, Burma, Burundi, Afghanistan, Puerto Rico, Togo, Tanzania, Pakistan, Thailand, Russia, Somalia and Sudan. We also have 42 regular, special ed. and Title I teachers servicing our culturally diverse population.

Our school’s demographics include 91% minority, 97% free and reduced lunch, and we have made AYP for the last 3 years. We are considered a 90/90/90 school based on our most recent PSSA science scores. We have also received a $5000 stipend for the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Title I School Improvement Award for raising PSSA levels, in both Reading and Math, more than 25% in five of our subgroups. This is a great example of the hard-working and dedicated staff and students we have here at McKinley.

In our school, the faculty, staff and families consider McKinley, not just a school, but community sanctuary where there is no limit to the success they can achieve.
