      Greetings!

I am pleased to be your child's art teacher this academic year at Harding Elementary School!  Great things are in store for our students in the Visual Art classes.  You can be assured that experiences in the art classes will enhance your child's learning in positive ways.

Each student is scheduled to take Art Education class once every 6 days.  Each grade level will complete art

projects that integrate the 7 Art Elements: Line, Shape, Color, Value, Form, Texture, Space . . .  with the . . .

7 Design Principles: Balance, Emphasis, Unity, Contrast, Rhythm, Pattern, MovementThe students will study

and complete art activities using a variety of materials and tools from crayons, markers, paper, pencils,

scissors, glue, tape, staplers, paint, brushes, ink, yarn, plaster, metal, clay, etc. so that each student gains a

variety of Art experiences.  The children will:  Draw, Trace, Cut, Glue, Construct, Mold, Form, Weave . . .

creating projects in: Drawing, Painting, Collage, Weaving, and 3-Dimensional Form/Sculpture.

Each grade level "builds-on" the ART production skills learned from the previous school year. An appreciation for making ART and looking-at ART will occur. Every year the students learn about famous artists throughout ART history.  And, the students will also learn how-to talk about ART in small and large group discussions.

Your student's grade is based-on the Erie's Public Schools "Elementary Related Arts grading scale" -

3 Level Grading Scale:  1 - Outstanding;  2 - Satisfactory- Needs Improvement. My classroom rules relate

directly to our Harding PBS Classroom Expectations: RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, and FOCUSED. The Art

    Classroom Rules are:

    1)   The Golden Rule - Treat others the way you want to be treated.

    2)   Safety First - Listen to all safety instructions.

    3)   Stay in your assigned seat and Raise your hand for a question.

    4)   One person speaks at a time - Listen to the speaker (teacher or peer).

A successful school year is a partnership between student, teacher, and parents/guardians.  I am excited to work with you, and I look forward to many enjoyable Art lessons with your student. If you have any questions or concerns during our time together, please feel free to contact me via my district email or call the school phone, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Peterson
