• Articulation

Articulation is the production of clear and distinct speech sounds.  Many students have difficulty producing speech sounds correctly which can result in speech that is difficult to understand.   In speech therapy we strive to produce our best speech by first practicing sounds in isolation, then in words, and then in sentences.  Another important step is practicing speech during real life tasks such as speaking with a sibling or playing a game.  Each of my students should know if they practice their speech with me and if so what sound/s they are practicing.  My students should continue to practice their speech in both structured practice in words/sentences and while participating in real life speech tasks.

Practice target sound first by themselves in isolation and then in words.  Make this fun by playing any sort of board game or card game.  Have your child practice saying a word 5 times and then use it in a sentence between turns.  You can practice a word on your turn too...try saying it wrong from time-to-time to see if your child can catch the mistake.  Please contact me if you need help getting your child to produce a speech sound as we don't want to practice it the wrong way.

  • One way to improve your child's speech skills at home is to have him/her use their best speech during real life situations throughout the week.  For example, during breakfast, you can provide frequent cues such as "use your best speech," and then monitor their speech for errors.  When an error occurs you can tell your child that the error has occurred and to have them repeat themselves with their best speech.  Giving lots of praise is very important.  When you hear a correct production tell your child that you noticed good speech and to keep trying their best.  Other good times for monitoring your child's speech may be during game play, conversations, during walks, or during chores around the house. Try to do this for at least 10 minutes per day or even twice a day for 5 minutes.
