School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS) Parent Guide

  • What is School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports?

School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) is a proactive approach to discipline that promotes appropriate student behavior and increased learning. Traditionally, models of school discipline tend to be reactive (i.e., student misbehavior results in punitive consequences).

The system is based upon a three-tiered model. The first tier (universal) serves as the foundation upon which the other two tiers are built. This tier provides a system of supports to all students in a school based on preventative practices which emphasize teaching and reinforcing expected student behaviors. Tier two (secondary) provides targeted interventions to support students classified as “at risk,” who require more intervention than is typically provided within tier one universal support. Supports offered in tier three (tertiary) require the most intensive level of intervention for students with the most significant behavioral/emotional support needs.

This system also includes students working for incentives.  PB has a variety of different incentive programs for the students to be a part of.  These include:

Classroom: Each classroom or grade level team will design an acknowledgement and incentive system to reward student success regarding expectations of the classroom or grade level matrix. This acknowledgement system must be different than the school-wide systems, but can follow a similar format.

Panther PAWS:   Classrooms collect PAWS as a reward for positive behavior displayed by the whole class (not by individual students). When a classroom collects enough PAWS to earn an incentive they get to choose an incentive for the class from the incentive menu.

Golden Spatula:  During each lunch, the lunch staff chooses a class from each lunch zone (East, Center, and West) that best demonstrates being respectful, responsible, and safe. The lunch staff announces the winners at the end of lunch and the classes that receives the “Golden Spatula” is recorded in the Lunch Binder by lunch duty staff and has a Golden Spatula Scoreboard to display in the homeroom. Once the homeroom accumulates 10 Golden Spatulas, they receive popcorn at lunch.

PB 100:  10 teachers will receive PB100 slips in their mailboxes each day. Teachers may award the slip to any student in the building seen demonstrating the weekly theme. If a student receives a slip then they come to the office at the end of the day and sign the Celebrity Book and pick a number from the bucket. Their name is then placed in that square on the chart.  When 10 squares in a row have been filled, those 10 students and the teachers who awarded them will receive a reward.
