March 13 is the last of two Snow Make-Up Days built into the district calendar. Any additional closures due to inclement weather – which includes snow and/or extreme temperatures – will result in additional days added to the end of the school year calendar.
Many of you have asked about virtual instruction, or Flexible Instruction Days. Erie's Public Schools no longer utilizes Flexible Instruction Days, which enabled students to complete work when schools were closed due to inclement weather. In reviewing our data, we found that some students had difficulty utilizing flexible instruction, causing us to reexamine our approach to inclement weather. We now have Snow Make-Up Days built into the calendar which allow us to take full advantage of the benefits of in-person classroom instruction. The full calendar can be found at eriesd.org/calendar.
We also recognize that school is the safest, warmest place for many of our students during inclement weather, and that flexible instruction from home poses particular challenges for many of our families,
As a reminder, parents may always choose to keep their children home during inclement weather. If your student has less than 10 excused absences, that absence will be excused with the submission of a written note. If your student has more than 10 excused absences, the absence will be unexcused. If the Superintendent announces an official "Parental Discretion Day" on the communication channels listed above, all written excuses will be accepted as excused.
Finally, a reminder that while other districts utilize two-hour delays during inclement weather, it is logistically unfeasible for Erie's Public Schools to do so due to busing schedules and other challenges.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. Stay safe and warm, EPS.

Tickets are $7 and will be sold at the door only. Cash and cards are accepted.
Choose from four show dates: January 30, 31, and February 6, 7 at 7:00 PM.

Are you interested in pursuing any form of secondary education after high school graduation?
We will have a night for our EPS families and students to receive hands-on help completing the FAFSA form. The FAFSA form is used to qualify for almost all types of financial aid, including federal and state grants as well as scholarships. Representatives from local agencies that are offering scholarships will also be present, as well as counselors to assist in applying for scholarships. Make sure to join us on Tuesday, February 10th at Erie High from 4 - 7 PM!

Just a reminder that there will be no school for students on Monday, January 26th, as this is a previously scheduled day off on the school calendar.

Due to the extreme temperatures and windchill forecast for Friday, all Erie’s Public Schools will be CLOSED on Friday, January 23. Students will now attend school on Monday, February 16 (Snow Make-Up Day 1 on the district calendar).
Please note that Monday, January 26, is a pre-scheduled non-attendance day for all students.

If you haven't signed up for ParentSquare yet, please do so! ParentSquare is the district's primary communication tool, used for delivering important and timely information, including essential information and updates in the event of an emergency.

Rory Gardner, a 12th-grade student in the VPA program at Collegiate Academy, has been named the 12th-grade winner and will receive a $500 award for her exceptional artwork. Bianca Flores, a 9th-grade student, has been selected as the 9th-grade winner and will receive a $200 award in recognition of her artistic talent and creativity.
An award ceremony honoring these students will be held on Tuesday, January 27th at 5:00 p.m. at the Youth Leadership Institute of Erie, 1306 E. Lake Road.
Congratulations, Rory and Bianca, for your artistic excellence and for powerfully reflecting the legacy and message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through the visual arts. Your accomplishments highlight the strength of the Visual and Performing Arts program at Collegiate Academy and the District’s commitment to fostering creativity, expression, and student achievement in the arts.

Students asked thoughtful questions, listened closely, and found inspiration in influential voices.
Next week, this exciting experience continues at Erie High School.
Stay tuned for Erie Reader’s February issue to find out what this exciting news is!
