  • Course Rationale / Overview

    The purpose of Algebra 1 is to develop fundamental skills necessary for success in future high school mathematics coursework.

    This foundation is established through challenging experiences and activities that require the application of prior math knowledge and critical thinking tactics to solve problems.

    Students taking this course will practice and strengthen their:

    • Math Literacy and Number Sense

    • Procedural Fluency and Agility

    • Competency in Recognizing, Applying and Developing Patterns

    • Ability to Abstract Relatable and Interesting Real-Life Situations into Accurate Mathematical Models

    This year you will use what you learned in your previous math classes to study:

    • Numeric and Algebraic Expressions

    • Equations in One Variable

    • Relations and Functions

    • Linear and Nonlinear Functions

    • Creating Linear Equations and Inequalities

    • Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities

    • Exponents, Roots, and Exponential Functions

    • Polynomials

    • Quadratic Functions

    • Statistics

    Most materials will be provided for you, but you’ll need to get these items yourself and bring them to class every day:

    • 3-Ring Binder with College Ruled Loose Leaf Paper

    • Sharpened Pencils or a Mechanical Pencil

    • School-issued Chromebook

    • Ruler and Graph Paper

  • Grading

    You will earn your grade by completing a variety of assignments like:

    • Written responses to warmup exercises (called “Do Nows”)

    • Written responses to exit exercises (called “TOD’s”)

    • Pair and Group work during class time

    • Discussion responses during class time

    • Presentations, Tests, Quizzes, Homework, and General Participation

    • Web-based submissions using REVEAL Math, Schoology, and ALEKS online

    DO NOT ASK ME ABOUT YOUR GRADE DURING CLASS TIME.

    • It is your responsibility to keep track of your own grade. Check the calendars and gradebooks for each of the following web portals FREQUENTLY to stay up-to-date:

      1. Infinite Campus.

      2. Schoology

      3. McGraw Hill REVEAL Algebra 1 via connectED

      4. McGraw Hill ALEKS

      5. my teacher webpage

    • If you have a question or concern about your grade, either:

      1. Message me in Schoology

      2. Email me using your school email

      3. Make an appointment to meet with me. I can be available during my prep period, after school, or before school.

    • Scores for daily work like “Do Nows”, participation, and classwork will be updated in Infinite Campus, Schoology, and REVEAL Algebra 1 by the end of each day. Scores for Homework and “TODs” will be entered weekly.  Test and Quiz scores should be entered weekly as well, but may occasionally take longer.

  • Assignments

    • All homework assignments are due at the beginning of the period (when the tardy bell rings).

    • No credit for work submitted on spiral bound notebook paper (jagged edges/scraps).

    • All work submitted for credit must be completed in pencil unless you are directed otherwise.

    • Write neatly and legibly. No credit will be given for work I cannot read.

    • Use the correct heading for all homework assignments:

  • Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a lowered grade.

    Projects and other large assignments (work assigned at least two days in advance) will be due on time (at the beginning of the period) whether you are present or not.  You must make arrangements to get the assignment to me when it is due.

    If you are ill or cannot attend school for any reason on the day the assignment is due, get your assignment time-stamped by the attendance office at or before 8:45 AM on the due date and have it delivered to my mailbox in the main office.

    FAILURE TO TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME WILL RESULT IN A ZERO SCORE.  PERIOD.

    (Hint: DON’T wait until the last minute to complete your homework or project!)  Use a planner or the calendar on your phone to keep track of due dates for assignments.  Or refer to the online assignment calendars in Infinite Campus, Schoology, REVEAL Algebra 2, ALEKS and my Teacher Webpage.  If you are absent, text a classmate to find out what you missed.

    MAKEUP WORK POLICY (Excused Absences Only)

    • Regular daily assignments (DO NOWs, Classwork, Class Participation) are generally not eligible for makeup. If you are absent for these assignments and the absence is excused, these assignments are dropped and will not count against you.  You are still responsible for knowing the material you missed, so consult a classmate and/or plan to attend a special help session when this happens.

    • Tests, Quizzes, and TODs: You have as many days as you were absent to sit for a makeup for full credit. No Credit Given after that.

    REMEMBER: I will NOT pursue you about your missed work; you must check the assignments calendar online, check with your fellow students, and get any notes, examples, or explanations from a trusted classmate.

    TO THOSE OF YOU INVOLVED IN cheer, ASL, Student Council, band, athletics, choir, etc.: Your schedule is especially demanding, but missed assignments or late work will not be excused.  Be responsible.  Plan ahead.

    LATE WORK POLICY (Excused Absences Only)

    • Daily Assignments – Possible Partial Credit (Tardy), No Credit – Dropped (Absent).

    • Homework – Eligible for full credit up 3 days upon return to school. No Credit after 3 days.

    • Projects and large assignments – You have a minimum of 3 days and up to as many days as you were absent to turn in the assignment for full credit. No Credit Given after that.

    TESTS, QUIZZES, Do Nows, TODs, HOMEWORK, and ALL OTHER ASSIGNMENTS missed as the result of an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE are INELIGIBLE FOR CREDIT and will result in a ZERO SCORE.  PERIOD.

     


  • Rules

    • Attend class! The classroom experiences planned for you are designed to help to learn. You cannot benefit from them if you are not here!

    • Be on time! You must be in your assigned seat and ready to work when the bell rings.

    • Be prepared! Bring daily-required materials to class with you every day.

    • Be respectful! Show respect to everyone and everything in class.

    • Remember, the teacher dismisses the class, NOT THE BELL.

    Also, the Code of Conduct in the Student Handbook applies while you are in class.  You are expected to comply with these rules as well and will be held accountable accordingly.
