Grade 5 Description
Instructional time for grade five focuses on developing automaticity with addition and subtraction of fractions, developing the understanding of multiplication and division of fractions, extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimals to the hundredths into place value and developing the understanding of volume.Students will apply their understanding of fractions and fraction models to demonstrate that addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators is equivalent to calculations with like denominators. They develop fluency in calculating sums and differences of fractions and make reasonable estimates of them. Students will apply their understanding of fractions, multiplication and division to explain why the procedures for multiplying and dividing fractions make sense.Students will progress their understanding of division with base-ten numerals and properties of operations. Fluency of multi-digit addition, subtraction and multiplication is to be achieved. They will apply their knowledge of models to add and subtract decimals fluently to the hundredths, as well as make reasonable estimates of the result. Students will utilize the relationship between fractions and decimals to understand and explain why the procedures for multiplying and dividing finite decimals make sense. They will apply their understanding of place value, decimals, multiplication and division to compute products and quotients to the hundredths.Lastly, students will understand volume as an attribute of a three-dimensional space. They will understand that volume can be measured by finding the total number of same-sized units without gaps or overlaps. A 1-unit by 1-unit by 1-unit cube is the standard unit for measuring volume. Selection of appropriate units and tools for estimating and measuring volume, decomposing three-dimensional shapes and finding volume of right rectangular prisms are skills required to solve real world and mathematical problems.Grade 5 Units of Study

Grade 5 Routines
Math Routines are an integral part of the curriculum. The math routine utilized in grade 5 is the 50 Facts Test. This timed assessment aides’ students in achieving fluency with multiplication facts. In the beginning of the year, the teacher is responsible for introducing and sharing the classroom routine with students, including how to appropriately graph results and what tools may be used, if any. However, as the year progresses, children should begin taking control of the graphing and monitoring of progress and the use of tools should be eliminated.Routines start the first day and are completed every other school day thereafter.The use of the 50 Fact Routine in the classroom will give students the opportunity to attain ownership of their facts fluency progress.
