• Grade 2 Description

In this grade level, students investigate and explore three units of study. During each unit, students practice and apply science process skills with a particular emphasis on making observations, communicating, comparing and organizing objects using physical properties.

Grade 2 earth science students focus on earth materials. In this unit, students observe, describe, and sort earth materials based on their properties. They compare ingredients in different soils, organize and communicate observations through drawing and writing, and acquire vocabulary associated with earth materials.

Grade 2 physical science students focus on properties of matter. In this unit, students engage in scientific inquiry as they expand their understanding of solids, liquids, and gases and how they change.   They will identify that solids, liquids, and gases can be described by their properties.  Students observe that materials may react with each other and may change from one state to another through heating or cooling.

Grade 2  life students focus on animal life cycles. In this unit, students investigate the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly. They observe, describe, and record the changes of the organism's life cycle. Students observe that organisms change their form and behaviors as part of their life cycles, and identify characteristics that appear in both parents and offspring.
