  • Grade 7 Routines

Math routines are an integral part of the middle school math curriculum and having students carry out these daily routines gives them responsibility for the concepts they are studying.

The mid-level mathematics classrooms follow a simple routine that can start with completing a short math “opener,” which consists of one or several questions that review the big ideas from the standards or the previous day’s learning target.  Next, students are asked to copy and review the learning target for the day’s class.  Teachers then begin the lesson for the day.  Our units follow the “Launch, Explore, Summarize” delivery method from the Connected Mathematics Project 2 (CMP2) series.

Classrooms are recommended to be arranged in groups of students that collaboratively work through the lesson questions. The Launch phase is often a short introduction to the lesson and provides vocabulary and activates prior knowledge. During the Explore phase, the teachers must work with the students to develop an on-task, open learning and sharing environment as the students solve the problems.  Finally, the Summary phase of the lesson is where ideas and answers are solidified.  Students are asked to present thoughts, answers and questions to the whole class.  With the students in the “driver’s seat,” teachers “sit in the front passenger seat” guiding students to formalized ideas and algorithms.
At the end of the lesson, it is recommended that some type of informal assessment is given to determine if the learning target of the class period was met.
