Throughout the month of February, students across the district will be learning about the achievements, contributions and efforts of African Americans to the fields of language and literature, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), arts and music, and social studies and political science. This third week, Feb. 19-23, we're focusing on art and music.

Strong Vincent Middle School
In Miss Ziegler's Art classes, students completed their Shading and Value Unit by selecting a Black artist and shading using a value scale. Students also chose to include an inspirational quote from that artist on their project.
Harding Elementary School
The second grade students learned facts about contemporary artist and writer Faith Ringgold. They listened to the story Tar Beach and then created their own personal "story quilt" inspired by her work.
Wilson Middle School
Wilson art students are learning about the Harlem Renaissance mural painter Aaron Douglas and creating their own works of art based on his art style.
Diehl Elementary School
Diehl students show off their art pieces inspired by Ashley Bryan (K), Mae Jamison (1st), Alma Thomas (2nd), Tyree Guyton (3rd), Jean-Michel Basquiat (4th/5th). Erie's Public Schools Cyber Choice Academy
Students in kindergarten through second grade at the Cyber Choice Academy explored the life of Louis Armstrong. The students watched a brief video about who Mr. Armstrong was and were amazed at his talent. We they read the book called "What a Wonderful World" and explored the lyrics of one of Mr. Armstrongs most popular songs. After reading and listening to the song students took a look around their classroom and were able to see what a wonderful world we are living in and all the beautiful colors that make us even more special. To remember this moment, the students colored a picture and made trumpets to take home and share.
Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary School
Students at Pfeiffer-Burleigh have been learning about Black history all month in their music classes. Check out Mrs. Ollmann's second grade class singing and signing "What About Martin" below!.McKinley Elementary School
Fourth-graders in Mrs. Miller's class, including Severin Bikorimana, Sally Garcia, and Prisha Khanal, researched famous musicians for Black History Month. They also learned about Misty Copeland and Bob Marley during a reading comprehension lesson.' students in Mrs. Groner’s art class at Lincoln learned about the amazing artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. They learned about his contributions to art and they also learned how to use elements such as color, line, texture, and symbolism to create art in the style of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Harding Elementary School
Mr. Madura’s second-graders learned about musician Louis Armstrong. Mrs. Caldwell’s second-graders and Mrs. McManus’s third-graders learned about artist Alma Thomas. Kindergartners in Mrs. Woofter's class learned about “Trombone Shorty," and Mr. Millimaci’s 5th graders jammed out with Charlie Parker.
